Doors slammed and engines revved. About 25 trekkers and their volunteer drivers headed off into the twilight toward the highway: “Hold the fort, for we are coming.” An hour later, when the vehicles stopped to fill up at a highway gas station, dozens of Mounties in riot gear poured out of rented cartage vans. Those trekkers who didn’t flee into the crowd of jeering, booing spectators were hustled away for questioning, along with the good-hearted volunteers.
